The Matrix

I have never been a fan of Science Fiction movies or books. I think that is why I had such a hard time understanding or appreciating this movie as many others did. I definately gained a much better understanding of what the movie was all about after I Googled the Matrix and read numerous reviews and interpretations of it. I have to admit that all of the religious overtones completely escaped me during my first veiwing of it however. I'm glad, because I know I would have been so caught up in how the movie contradicted many of my personal religious beliefs, that I wouldn't have been able to concentrate on anything else.

I totally agree, I am not a big fan of the whole science fiction, got a bigger underlying message thing. I usually miss the hidden message too. Maybe it's because I'm usually not paying too much attention and am completely lost :0)

I didn't get all of the messages the first time through either. And I would definitely say I am not a big science fiction fan -- although I find movies about utopia and dystopia (like Children of Men) really interesting. I think one of the things that is most important to think about this film is the idea of convergence -- that the story of the matrix goes on, well past the movies, into comic books and video games and fan sites.... To watch a movie anymore is a much bigger thing than just the movie, you know?
